Western Truck Driving Schools FAQ
Does it cost to submit an application?
Applying is completely free of charge.
Where does my application go after I submit it?
We will send your application to trucking driving schools that are looking to hire individuals with the same skills and qualifications that you have.
What are the qualifications?
Experience is not required; we will match you with schools and training programs that provide adequate training to get your truck driving career started. However, most trucking companies are looking for individuals with a safe driving record and a clean background..
Are there any federal requirements?
Federal requirements are determined by the U.S. DOT (Department of Transportation) and every potential truck driver must meet such requirements before they are hired by any trucking company. These include (but are not limited to) being at least 21 years old to drive between states, having U.S. citizenship, being able speak and write English, and getting a commercial driver’s license (CDL).
Do I have to take a drug test?
Yes, this is another requirement given by the Department of Transportation. Anyone who enrolls in a truck driving school or training program is required to take a drug test to see if any illegal substances (such as marijuana or cocaine) are being used. Random drug testing continues throughout the duration of a truck driver’s employment.
I have a previous misdemeanor/felony conviction. Can I still apply?
There are some trucking companies and schools that are willing to accept and hire individuals with past felonies or misdemeanors, while others are not. If you have any past convictions, please indicate it on your application so we can accurately match you with companies that are currently willing to review your application.
How much will training cost?
Training may cost anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 depending on the particular truck driving school you choose to attend. While this may seem rather costly, most schools offer financial assistance and some trucking companies will hire you first and sponsor for your training or offer tuition reimbursement once you start actually working for them.
How long does training last?
Training can last anywhere from two to six weeks, again depending on the particular program you participate in. Training typically consists of classroom training where you learn general knowledge such as driving regulations, company policies, etc. Then you will receive actual driving training where you will be able to complete some training and log some miles behind-the-wheel.
